The Slow Burn: News

Exit Joe, Enter Jess and Abby. - July 20, 2010

We recently underwent a few personnel changes in The Slow Burn.  In May, after many righteous grooves, we parted amicably with our bass player of three years Joe Loftus.

We were very fortunate to quickly find a replacement in Jess Robinson.

We are also delighted to announce that we have added a new member to the lineup:  Abby Sanford has joined us on lead and backing vocals.  It’s nice to add a little estrogen to the Man Cave!

We have been woodshedding to get our new members up to speed, and we are looking forward to our first outing at the Mantua Pool on July 24th from 6-9.

We hope you can join us!

Best,
Ted Donat

Song of the Moment #6 - May 28, 2009

Hope you are doing well!

I wanted to take a moment to remind you about our upcoming shows and to do another Song of the Moment installment.

First, the gigs:

We will be returning to Brothers Encore Pub in Montclair, VA on Saturday, June 6th at 9 PM. We love playing at Brothers. The crowds are great, and the grub is even better!

On June 20th we will be playing at the Mantua Swim & Tennis Club – the local pool. This gig is free for members of the pool. If you are not a member and you would like to come, let me know and we'll see about getting you in as a guest.

For more info on these gigs, please check out our Calendar page: http://www.theslowburn.com/calendar.html.

Song of the Moment:

The first selection is from Tinted Windows, a new “supergroup” composed of four members: Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne (“Stacy’s Mom”), James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins, Bun E. Carlos from Cheap Trick (you read that right!) and on vocals Taylor Hanson of…Hanson. You may not have taken that group seriously, but believe me, Taylor Hanson can SING! (I’ll cop to the fact that I used to secretly sing along to MMMBop – will you?) The tunes are a throwback to the eighties – pure power pop and very catchy. I am including the song “Dead Serious” from their self-titled debut album. I dare you not to be humming this all day!

For more on Tinted Windows, go to http://www.tintedwindowsmusic.com/
I also recently became aware of the band Kings of Leon, which is made up of the four Followill brothers from Tennessee – Caleb, Jared, Matthew and Nathan. Daddy was a preacher and dragged the four boys from church to church where he would deliver fiery sermons. The boys were forbidden to watch TV or listen to the radio growing up. Whether or not their upbringing influenced the intensity of their performance, I don’t know, but there is no shortage of angst on the track “Use Somebody” from their album "Only By the Night" which I have put up on the share.

Here’s a video of them performing the song live on Leno on May 15th.

These guys are the real deal!

As always, if you like the tunes, please support the artists and buy the mp3's/CD's.

All the best,
Ted Donat

TSB Update / Song of the Moment - May 7, 2009

Dear Friends,

It seems like forever since I wrote last, so I thought I would fill you in on some news, and take the occasion to do a Song of the Moment too!

JUNE GIGS

We have a couple of gigs coming up in June we wanted to tell you about.

First we will be returning to Brothers Encore Pub in Montclair, VA on June 6th. We love playing at Brothers. The crowds are great, and the grub is even better!

Also, on June 20th we will be playing at the Mantua Swim & Tennis Club - our local pool. This gig is free for members of the pool. If you are not a member and you would like to come, let me know and we'll see about getting you in as a guest.

For more info on these gigs, please check out our Calendar page: http://www.theslowburn.com/calendar.html.

WEBSITE REFRESH

We recently did a refresh of our website and we'd love to know what you think. You can even see a picture of our bassist Joe Loftus (it only took us two years to get a picture of him up on the site!)

Once you have had a tour, mosy on over to the guestbook and share your thoughts.

SONG(S) OF THE MOMENT

You may have heard of "Pandora". It's a site where you tell it what kind of music you like, and they stream music to you - some stuff you know, and other stuff you don't that they think you might like. One artist I discovered there is Richard X. Heyman. His jangly pop is reminiscent of The Byrds and Matthew Sweet, and his production ethic is akin to Todd Rundgren's - like Todd, he often plays all the instruments himself.

I have uploaded the song "Everywhere She Goes", an infectious pop gem, to the share:

http://cid-0a3434d89334a56a.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Public/Song%20of%20the%20Moment/2009
Here is a link to Pandora: http://www.pandora.com/
And here is a link to his website: http://www.richardxheyman.com/

Is Amy Winehouse a train wreck? Sure.

Can she sing? Hells yeah.

Check out her version of "Valerie" from the "I Told You I Was Trouble (Live in London)" DVD, which I have also uploaded to the share.

If you want to see the video (caution, you will be concerned for her health!), go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdM97BtS9R8
Finally, I'm a huge fan of witnessing the creative process - the sausage-making, as I like to call it. I'm including a cut from one of our rehearsals of a great new song of Paul's called "When the World Is Asleep". We were woodshedding on this, and it is quite evident in the recording. Paul is calling out instructions and we are trying to follow. It is by no means a perfect document, but I think it captures very well our working style. I put it on the share. (Paul will almost definitely kill me when he discovers that I have done this, so it was nice knowing you!)

As always, if you like the tunes, please support the artists and buy the mp3's/CD's.

All the best,
Ted Donat

Best,
TD

Finally, Giuseppe! - April 21, 2009

The Irresistibles Ride Again - August 18, 2008

If you should happen to find yourself in the Cape Cod vicinity on August 23rd, the legendary ska/dance band The Irresistibles - with whom I sang lead and scratched out some riddim guitar - are reuniting for one night only on Nantucket at the one and only Muse!

I ran with this ragtag crew of rude boys in the mid-'80's under the alias "Steady Teddy". I left some of my best brain cells on Nantucket back then. I'm going back to see if I can reclaim them!

Here's the info:

TSB Rocked the Monkey! - February 8, 2008

Thanks to all of our friends who joined us a The Brass Monkey in Baltimore on Saturday, 2/2! Special shout outs to Tonya and John, and to Heather for bringing friends! And thanks to Hannah and her husband and friend for representing for B-More! We had a great night and hope to return there soon!

A fabulous night in Old Town! - December 9, 2007

We played the Austin Grill in Old Town on Friday and it was undoubtedly the best Slow Burn show ever! We had been doing a lot of rehearsing and learning of new songs, and we were really raring to show off. We arrived at the venue at around 9 and started setting up. The logistics and the PA were a bit tricky, but we finally got started a little after 10. The crowd immediately started grooving to the music. Some of our friends were there, including Tamara, Beth and Ian, but for the most part, it was just the local crowd enjoying the tunes. As our first set wore on, people started to dance, and by about 11, just about everybody was boogeying! We took a short break and hit again at midnight. A real highlight was the singalong for "Last Kiss". Thanks to everyone who helped to make it a special night, including Adam, who sat in on harp on for few tunes, the Texas girls and the staff at the AG! We hope to be back again soon!

"Desire" featured on WMVY - October 4, 2007

"Desire" was recently added for inclusion on mvyradio.com's Local MusiCafe. WMVY is a great rock station out of Martha's Vineyard. I spent three Summers working on Nantucket and playing in a band, and MVY was always on - in the kitchen where I worked, on the transistor radio in my shared house or on my car radio! Here's the link: http://www.mvyradio.com/local_musicafe/index.php?target=recent.

The Slow Burn featured on XM Radio for the second time! - September 20, 2007

Tonight, DJ Billy Zero played "Drowning" on XMU (XM Radio Channel 43) on the "Radar Report", a show that features up and coming artists. He even said it was "pretty cool"!

In February, "(When We Get Bored) We Get Dangerous" was featured on the same program. Listen to the clip, including the comments of the DJs on our "Music" page.

And check out http://www.radiounsigned.com/index02.html to see our name in lights! Click on the "Archives" tab on the right and then on
the date 09.20.07.

Thanks to Taylor Simmons for promoting us at XM!

TD

Don't miss our first gig with Joe Loftus at The Grog on 8/24 at 8 PM! - July 13, 2007

I hope everyone is enjoying the Summer! We are delighted to announce

few new tunes in the set, so come on down!

"Let's Do It!" on your iPod - June 6, 2007

Not Your Average Joe / CD Sale - May 29, 2007

Hope everyone had a nice Memorial Day! We had some family in town and we trekked out to Annapolis, MD, where we toured around and took a fantastic ride on the gorgeous schooner "Woodwind 2".

Here's a little Annapolis trivia for you: Besides being the capital of Maryland and the home of the US Naval Academy, did you know that Annapolis served as our nation's capital from 1783 to 1784?

Me neither!

But I digress... After an exhausting search process, we are delighted to announce that The Slow Burn has a new bass player! Please join us in welcoming Joe Loftus!

Here's Joe on Joe: "Joe Loftus, a Washington area native, has been playing bass guitar and other various instruments for a number of years. In the '80's Joe played way too many eighth notes with various wave bands. In the '90's Joe played with a schizo meta-physical group called Joe Loftus & Sacred Ground, playing the alternative everything circuit with just the right dash of melodrama. In the '00's Joe has returned to the DC music scene from utter obscurity to lay down some funk for The Slow Burn."

To celebrate our new lineup, and just 'cuz, we are having a late Spring sale on our debut CD "Let's Do It!" We're lowering the price from $15 to $10 (plus S&H) for the month of June, so make your move now! Just click on the "BUY" link to your left.

Look for us to announce some shows in the June/July timeframe.

All the best,
Ted Donat
